Training Today’s Mariners. Leading Tomorrow’s Industry.

At Norfolk Tug Company, you’re joining a team—not filling a position. We believe in accountability and continuous improvement. Our crews are supported through structured training, mentorship, and a clear path for growth.

A career here is built on teamwork, responsibility, and pride in doing rewarding work the right way.

Our Approach to Development

We invest in our people because strong operations start with capable mariners. From entry-level deckhands to future captains, Norfolk Tug provides the tools, training, and time required to build real competence—not just credentials.

Career Paths & Positions

At Norfolk Tug Company, crews operate on a consistent two-weeks-on, two-weeks-off rotation. Watch schedules are typically six hours on / six hours off or twelve hours on / twelve hours off, depending on the vessel. All vessels are staffed with five- to six-person crews, emphasizing teamwork, clear communication, and shared responsibility across every role.

Deckhands

Deckhands play a vital role in vessel operations. Without deckhands, the work of engineers, mates, and captains can’t be completed — every role onboard depends on the others working together.

Responsibilities include:

  • Support tug and barge operations, including line handling, tow work, lookout duties, and radio communication
  • Stand watch and maintain vessel safety, conducting rounds and ensuring security and watertight integrity
  • Perform vessel and barge maintenance, including painting, cleaning, equipment care, and general upkeep
  • Follow safety procedures and emergency protocols, using PPE properly and reporting unsafe conditions
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization onboard, supporting housekeeping and daily living needs

You’ll work as part of a small crew—typically 4–5 professional mariners—where teamwork, communication, and reliability are essential.

Vessel Engineers

Engineers are responsible for maintaining the mechanical systems that keep our vessels running safely and efficiently.

Responsibilities include:

  • Operate and monitor vessel machinery, including engines, generators, fuel, and auxiliary systems in coordination with the Master and Mate
  • Perform engine room rounds and inspections, recording readings, logs, and vessel condition reports accurately and on schedule
  • Maintain and repair mechanical systems, planning and completing preventive and corrective maintenance using company systems
  • Support fueling, transfers, and inventory management, ensuring compliance with regulations and proper documentation
  • Ensure emergency and firefighting readiness, maintaining equipment, responding to alarms, and supporting drills and emergency procedures

Mates

Mates are responsible for the safe navigation and maneuvering of twin-screw tugboats during towing operations while the Captain is off watch. Working closely with the Captain, Mates play a critical role in vessel handling, situational awareness, and overall operational execution.

This position is intended for experienced mariners who understand the demands of towing operations and professional watchstanding. Norfolk Tug supports Mate development through a structured training program focused on advancing vessel handling skills, operational decision-making, and leadership on the water.Licensing requirements in the PDF as well, I believe.

Mate Training Program: Holding a license does not automatically prepare someone to operate a tugboat in towing service. Norfolk Tug addresses this gap by employing licensed mates in dedicated training roles for approximately 12–18 months. During this time, mates gain real-world experience under supervision, preparing them to safely lead future operations.

Captains

Captains lead vessel operations and crews. This role requires years of experience, sound judgment, and a proven commitment to safety and professionalism.
